H.E Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane today launched the second phase of the European Union’s three year funded project aimed at enhancing the self-reliance of refugees and host communities in Dadaab. The project will support Dadaab Municipality by improving urban infrastructure and public spaces as part of a broader goal to foster socio-economic inclusion and enhance the quality of life for both refugees and host communities. It will be implemented by the County Department of Lands in collaboration with UN-Habitat together with UNHCR, UN-WFP and UN-FAO.
 
In his remarks, DG Dagane emphasized the County’s commitment to ensuring that the project aligned with local development priorities. He said the County was ready to support the project’s full implementation as it will uplift the living standards of refugees and the host community bringing much-needed improvements to Dadaab’s urban infrastructure.

The DG’s sentiments were echoed by the Speaker of the County Assembly Hon. Abdi Idle who highlighted the role of policy and legislative frameworks in ensuring that projects of this nature led to sustainable development for the local communities. CECM Lands, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development Hon. Mohamed Hussein informed that this new project was building on the successes of earlier phase 2016-2023 phase by expanding on the spatial planning, urban regeneration strategies, and public infrastructure improvements in Dadaab municipality.

Representatives from UN-Habitat expressed optimism, stating that the partnership between the County Government and development agencies will support the newly formed Dadaab Municipality in urban management and service delivery which will lead to sustainable and inclusive growth of the Municipality. Present were CECM Education, Information and ICT Hon. Ebla Minhaj, Members of the county assembly led by the Chair Lands and Urban Development Committee Hon. Khadija Idris, Chief Officer Lands, Survey and Physical Planning Hassan Abdi, the CEO Dadaab Municipality Mohamed Abdi as well as representatives from various Government ministries and various UN agencies.
